PRE-OPERATIONAL CHECKS

Prior to operation, the hoist operator or another competent person must complete a routine inspection and record it in a logbook or maintenance records. The Liftcare Services Logbook is fully compliant with both AS/NZS 2550.9:1996 Section 6.5 and AS 2550.1—2011 Section 7.5, and it’s available in a weatherproof pouch for installation on the hoist / tailgate loader.

MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS

It is required that:

  • Pre-operational inspections are conducted by the hoist operator or a competent person.
  • 90-day (3-month), annual (12-month), and major inspections (10-year, 20-year, and 25-year) are completed by a competent person.
  • All inspections must comply with AS 2550.1 & AS 2550.9 and management’s instructions.
  • Inspections, repairs, and maintenance are recorded in accordance with Clause 6.5 of AS/NZS 2550.9:1996.

Competent Person Definition

According to Safe Work Australia’s Code of Practice, a competent person for vehicle hoist inspections must have relevant engineering training or qualifications, along with the skills and knowledge to perform the inspection tasks.

Management’s Responsibilities

Management must ensure:

  • All personnel involved in the operation, inspection, and maintenance of vehicle hoists are adequately trained, qualified, and authorised.
  • Manuals and management instructions are accessible to operators and maintenance personnel.
  • Maintenance and repair records comply with Clause 6.5 of AS/NZS 2550.9:1996.
  • All inspections and maintenance align with manufacturer or competent person recommendations prior to use.
  • Non-compliant hoists are removed from service until compliant.
  • Emergency procedures are established, and personnel are fully trained in their application.

Operator’s Responsibilities

Management must ensure:

  • Operators understand operating and emergency procedures.
  • Operators use the hoist in accordance with management’s instructions.
  • Operators report any discrepancies or malfunctions.
  • Operators check the operational environment for hazards.
  • Operators ensure load ratings are not exceeded.
